Malia Santos defended her undergraduate thesis on Great Bustard population genetics. She has previously studied the effects of climate change on a population of Joshua Trees with Dr. Christopher Smith. She is now pursuing her doctoral degree at University of Idaho, with a focus on the evolution of plant defenses to herbivory.
